Notes:

Etudes and Vignettes was composed in the aftermath of a traumatic injury sustained amidst the COVID-19 pandemic—a shock within a shock, a tragedy nested in a global tragedy. The work traces both the cataclysmic rupture of that moment and the long process of adaptation that followed. Each movement embodies a different stage: the horror of sudden irrevocable change, the disorienting detours of a life redirected with unexpected bright spots, and the slow perseverance of pressing forward through opacity and difficulty. Written for the first prototype of the EV in 2020, the piece also became a proving ground for the instrument’s evolving design, testing its ability to articulate states of fracture, resilience, and transformation. In this sense, the work reflects a broader inquiry into how our lives remain entwined with technology—its capacity for devastation and repair.

Over continued iteration, Etudes & Vignettes was finally realized in its intended live form, performed using EV 2.5 at the 2023 SEAMUS conference in NYC.
