NUAGES
Nuages is the second album composed with the EV. “The Sea,” the first movement or track, evokes emotional turbulence during the composer’s recovery from an accident and the COVID-19 pandemic. Written for the EV, a hybrid digital-acoustic instrument of the composer’s design, it parallels the ocean’s shifting moods with the complexities of personal upheaval and resilience.
“Meditation 20” speaks to the disciplined cultivation of mental fortitude—a journey of inner discovery and self-mastery born from repeated efforts to find equilibrium amid personal tragedy and turmoil. Each iteration represents another attempt to locate that elusive center, a place of stillness within the storm.
“Ancient Rite” explores this transformative process through the lens of ancestral wisdom. The work invites us to walk the time-worn paths our predecessors traveled, drawing from wells of knowledge that have sustained humanity through countless trials. In embracing this sacred ritual, we connect with something greater than ourselves—a continuum of healing and understanding that transcends individual experience.
All material on Nuages was created with the EV, a hybrid augmented stringed instrument of the composer’s creation that bridges the acoustic and digital realms. The EV combines traditional viola performance techniques with advanced sensor technology and real-time signal processing, allowing the performer to sculpt and transform sound through physical gesture and bow articulation. This fusion of traditional music-making and contemporary technology creates an expanded sonic palette that extends far beyond the conventional viola while maintaining the intimacy and expressiveness of acoustic performance.
